Dear Katie and others
The useful information Katie has given that the APA supports the
community psychology section in Australia in a very forthright way,
this seems to suggest that it would be a positive step to get the
Section running in the UK as soon as possible.
It is obvious that I am at loggerheads with the current position, but
this is because the situation has suddenly been thrust upon "us",
that we are not ready to meet a deadline which should have been known
about long before this, and properly prepared for. No explanation
for this state of affairs has been offered, that I am aware of. I
have to say that I think the failure to arrive at a decision about
fees, which what the BPS committee will be clearly aware of, speaks
very poorly about the organisational abilities of the "community
section", and will be seen as such - not an auspicious start, not
commanding respect and goodwill.
I cannot find the right word to properly express my frustration about
the phrase "rubber stamping" something the BPS imposes, or words to
that effect, as a default position. It is up to the Community
Psychology group to put forward their own proposals, which they have
failed to do, and failed to discuss even with the existing membership
of the list (in 6 years). So the BPS is almost presented as part of
a conspiracy to do down the Community Section, when the support for
the general idea conveys the opposite. Given the news from
Australia, I really think this is an unpleasant and self-defeating
approach to take, and it is very hard to understand what precisely is
holding up the integration of the present community list with the BPS
section.
I also do not think that David's reply to Nicola Swan actually
addresses the issue, that the various parties struggling with issues
to do with community psychology as it might be applied
are not going to get the support for which they voted. Maybe they
will go off the idea by next year.
As ever,Erica Brostoff
