Hi all,
Jeff Sonas, the creator of the Chessmetrics rating system, has just
launched a competition to develop a superior chess rating system
(http://kaggle.com/chess). Competitors build their rating systems based
on the results of more than 65,000 historical chess games. They then
test their algorithms by predicting the results of another 7,809 games.
Entries to the competition are benchmarked against Elo as well as other
well-known rating systems.
The competition has only just kicked off, but already several teams have
developed more accurate systems
(http://kaggle.com/chess?viewtype=leaderboard). It's not a surprise that
teams have been able to outperform Elo. After all, the system was
developed half a century ago - long before we could easily process large
amounts of data. However, it is a surprise that Elo has been beaten so
quickly!
Hopefully some of you are interested in joining in.
Regards,
Anthony
