Dear Vikki
Excellent suggestion. Anything we can do to make life easier is
welcomed. It would also help to raise the profile of NPG.
Kind regards
Zita

Dear all,
As many of you will know, we now have a National Planners? Group (NPG)
which is basically developing into an equivalent of ARC for the Academic
Registrars/SROC for student records. Part of the remit of the group is
intended to be to be able to raise issues of common concern in the
community and see if we can improve things. Given what seems to be a
fairly general concern about format and timing of the NSS data, it might
be helpful for the NPG to make contact with the NSS team and see if we
can
improve the data formats and get more clarity over timing?
Could colleagues let me know if they think this might be helpful?
Best wishes Vikki

Hello Jennifer and All,
Please see the comment back from my Surveys team concerning the problems
you?ve been having with the release of the NSS data. Hopefully the
information below should be of help.

Sheryl,
The format of the data is consistent with previous years? releases, and
as
such I can?t say I?ve had any trouble making sense of the data. The only
difference in format this year is that the NSS team have started to
report
figures in relation to where students are ?Taught? (the Unistats
standard)
as well as where they are ?Registered?. I can see how this may cause
confusion for someone who is new to the data, but this new way of
reporting was made clear a while ago.
However, I would agree with the comment on timing. For our Institution
at
least, the individual tables were published in a slightly strange order
(JACS breakdowns before overall scores for comparators, ?Registered?
data
long before ?Taught?), and the comparators? overall scores were delayed
so
much that we were unable to prepare anything on them in time for the
press
release date.
If Jennifer is getting overwhelmed with the amount of spreadsheets
available, my advice would be to start with the spreadsheet named ?2010
my
taught data? for you internal analysis, and the ?2010 My public data?
for
anything that will be made public.
Regards,
Rob

Hello
Is anyone else very frustrated with the format (not to mention the
timing)
of the NSS data as its been released this year? We're having a lot of
problems making any sense of the 100+ spreadsheets which seem to be a
totally unhelpful mix of raw data and partial analysis, without any
thought to how institutions might wish to use the data to understand the
context in which they operate.
Any insight - particularly if you're managing to get the tables to work
for you - would be welcome.
Jennifer
