I think that this is excellent advice. One of the first things I
taught each of my children was the "protective egg". I taught each one
this simple tool when they were very young and expressed fears of the
dark or being alone in a room. I think that this is both good
"headology" and a good starting point for magical work. Also, since we
are Jewish and the bedtime shema is part of our daily practice, I
taught the kids to use one of the prayers from there as a protective
spell. (Afterall, many ceremonial magicians and Wiccans use a version
of this prayer as part of the lower banishing ritual of the
pentagram.)
We have a rule in our family that you don't get to learn cartomancy
until you are 13. It was the rule my great grandmother used with my
grandmother and mother, and what I've passed on to my kids. As a
result, each of my kids as well as my brother's kids have gotten to
pick out their first Tarot deck at age 13 along with lessons in how to
read fortunes in playing cards. My great grandmother would probably
have freaked out at the idea of us reading Tarot. I know that my mom
certainly didn't approve of that when I first started. The women in my
family only read playing cards in the last few generations, but I've
adapted the family traditions a bit. ;)
