I am looking for information on John Pattinson Kirk (1835 -1913) who lived
in House called Honeywood in Carshalton, Surrey, which is now a museum
belonging to the London Borough of Sutton.
Kirk was born in Alston and was probably related to Hugh Lee Pattinson who
discovered a Pattinson process for extracting silver from lead and went on
the form a chemical company. When the 1861 census was made John Pattinson
Kirk was an assistant chemist lodging at 6 George Street, West Gate,
Newcastle on Tyne. By 1874 he was a commercial traveller living in Alston
but we don't know what he was selling.
He came to Honeywood in 1878 and died there in 1913. In the 1890s he was
partner in Marion and Co a major photographic supply company based in Soho
Square in London.
His background makes me suspect that he may have had mining connections
especially in the early part of his career. Has anybody come across him?
