In N.I. We are currently looking at a regional "sticker" to help midwives interpret CTG traces based on the NICE 2008 intrapartum care guideline
These will refer to decelerations as typical and Atypical as well as true early decelerations and late decelerations
It will be brought into units with teaching to all staff regarding which is which and what is what if that makes sense

Subject: Late decelerations
Would be grateful for some advice for anyone who has had to address this
issue themselves.
Recently I have been involved with a debate as to whether midwives
should still be referring to late and early decelerations when
interpreting CTG tracings. There are some individuals who now refer to
early and late decelerations as typical and atypical decelerations.
Just wondered whether the use of typical and atypical decelerations are
now used elsewhere to replace 'earlys' and 'lates'.
Thanks
Mary
