Hannibal, a propos the corpus: June and Paul S. appear to accept that
Harvey's 'mysterious Gentlewoman' is indeed Mary Sidney, but they restrict
the corpus to four poems. I argued in SEL 2000 that Mary, the mysterious
gentlewoman of PPS,actually wrote the 3 (rather execrable) poems knocking
Nashe, and the exuberant bit of prose that goes with them, that Harvey
cites. The article is 'Milksop Muses', but I can't refer to it at the
moment, or I would quote some of her verse correctly, rather than risking
my memory of the lines.
They may not be a welcome addition; but as you say, genre explains a lot,
and these were silly jeux d'esprit.
Perhaps I should brave the TLS when I get home from hols, and say all this?
Penny.
