Subject: Identifying researchers: repository feedback needed
Dear all,
Unambiguous identification of individuals involved in research has been
a
hot topic in recent years and has a particular impact on repositories of
research outputs. The Names Project is being funded by JISC to
investigate
issues around this area and to develop a pilot name authority system for
UK
researchers and their institutions.
The Project team is currently developing a prototype which matches
author/contributor names to research outputs and establishes unique
identifiers for those researchers (http://names.mimas.ac.uk/). We have
now
generated several thousand identities using data extracted from the
British
Library's Zetoc database and are keen to generate an understanding of
the
issues and concerns facing the repository community in order to further
develop this prototype.
A short survey relating to this topic is now available at
http://www.survey.bris.ac.uk/mimas/names/. The survey is designed to
gather
information on current practice in UK institutional repositories in
regard
to the entry and control of the names of individuals and to assess the
usefulness of a name authority system like the one being developed by
the
Names Project.
The survey can be accessed from today until 5pm Friday 30th July. (A PDF
version is attached so that you can see what you're letting yourself in
for
by going to the survey site.)
Thanks in advance for your time!
Amanda
