Yes there are "family" records that are also created when the Health
Visiting Service carries out their health visits and they can cover the
mother/father. The Health Visiting Service holds these with the
youngest child's health record.
Each individual could also have a health record for any clinical/medical
care they receive from an NHS Organisation.

A lot of the queries I have asked them are linked to Children's Records
and as we now have far more integrated services with education, councils
etc it is essential that we retain our health records for the longest
retention period, however I have found that the NHS retention periods
are often longer than none NHS retention periods and therefore there are
risks that have to be managed.
If from your experience you have other guidance, then maybe you could
share this with the RMS Group which would be useful. I am unsure on
what you mean by you have never come across a children record and find
this as odd as I think you have found the content of my email - it would
be interesting to have your perspective.

I don't really see how you can apply the recommendations for retention
of clinical/medical records to the records relating to residence at a
school, or anywhere else for that matter.
In forty years, I don't think I've ever come across a children record
type. Are there father records and mother records as well?
However, I would be interested in the citations for the age 25 , age 26
and 8 years after death retention periods, as this is something I'm
currently looking at.

Liz
Throughout the Records Management Code of Practice it states "refer to
Children and young people", which is as follows:
Children and young people (all types of records relating to children and
young people)
Retain until the patient's 25th birthday or 26th if young person was 17
at conclusion of treatment, or 8 years after death. If the illness or
death could have potential relevance to adult conditions or have genetic
implications, the advice of clinicians should be sought as to whether to
retain the records for a longer period
Destroy under confidential conditions
Therefore it doesn't matter if they are schooled at a Boarding School or
not it is around the type of record it is i.e. Children.
Hope this helps

Subject: Boarding School Records
Hi everyone,
Has anybody any knowledge of record retentions for boarding schools? I
have come across the National Minimum Standards for Boarding Schools but
it does not give details of retention. I assume the pupil files are kept
at 25 years after date of birth as with any other school but what about
records created to do with the residential aspect. Obviously these young
people are not 'looked after' children so I assume the Children's Homes
Regulations 2001 do not apply.
Any advice would be most appreciated
Thanks
Liz
