Subject: Re: [PSCI-COM] Copyright and use of video clips in education sessions
Hi Ruth
Last year the BBC started to make clips of programmes, including wildlife shows, available for educational use on their BBC Learning Zone broadband website http://www.bbc.co.uk/learningzone/clips/ . Its hard to tell from the site whether education institutions that are not schools are allowed to stream them (you can't download them) and the link to the section on copyright seems to be broken, but perhaps this will help you identify clips which BBC have at least cleared for use online, and you could then contact them directly for permission for particular ones?
ArKive also have hundreds if not thousands of wildlife clips online http://www.arkive.org/education/ and I believe you are allowed to download them. The link to their terms and conditions does work so you can see whether you think this applies to your institution here http://www.arkive.org/about/terms.html and this website at least tells you who owns the copyright so that you can contact them directly if you need to.
By the way, if you wanted to use the Wellcome Trust's Tree of Life video (showing how animals evolved) or any of the bits of the interactive version (little videos / stills of various animals) - these are all free to download here http://www.wellcometreeoflife.org/resources/
Best of Luck

Hello Ruth
You would need to see permission from the copyright owner for 'non-theatrical rights' - that is you would not charge a fee to show the material. Some video content owners sell rights to use clips - often with an educational discount.
Good luck... Linda

Subject: [PSCI-COM] Copyright and use of video clips in education sessions
Dear Psci-com,
Apologies for any cross-posts.
I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on the copyright laws surrounding the use of small sections of film from DVDs (e.g. BBC wildlife documentaries) in educational sessions.
As an Education Officer at London Zoo there are a wealth of resources at hand to engage school children (including live animals and animal artefacts from HM Customs and Excise). However, we feel that there are some topics where video clips of real animals could be a invaluable aid and add yet another dimension to the learning experience, but we are unsure about how we are allowed to use them.
For example if we wanted to illustrate adaptations for defence by showing a short excerpt of something like an armadillo curling up from, say, a BBC wildlife documentary, would we need to seek permission or even pay for a licence?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Many thanks,
Ruth
