A postdoctoral position in experimental physical chemistry is available in Doreen Leopold's lab at the University of Minnesota. The goal of this project is to study the structures and reactivities of gas phase transition metal clusters. These will be prepared in a flow tube and reacted with a variety of unsaturated organic molecules, such as acetylene, ethylene, and benzene. Reaction product anions will be mass-selected and probed by anion photoelectron spectroscopy. This project builds upon our previous study of the reaction of atomic niobium with ethylene molecules to produce niobium-benzene anions, as described in J. Am. Chem. Soc. 129, 3482-3 (2007). Spectroscopic data will include electron affinities, electronic state energies, and vibrational frequencies for the metal clusters and metal-ligand products. These results will provide insight into the molecular and electronic structures of organometallic radicals that may serve as models for intermediates in reactions of transition metal catalysts, and will help elucidate structure-reactivity relationships.
The position will be available starting Sept. 1, 2010, or as soon as possible thereafter. It is for a minimum of one year, and is extendable for up to two more years upon mutual agreement. Health insurance benefits are included, and some assistance for relocation is available. Applicants should have completed a Ph.D. in experimental physical chemistry, or a related field, prior to the planned starting date. A strong experimental and instrumental background in one or more of the following areas is preferred: molecular or ion beam techniques, photoelectron spectroscopy, molecular electronic or vibrational spectroscopy, high vacuum techniques, charged particle optics, and laser techniques.
Applicants should send a statement of their research experience and interests and a CV, and have 2 or 3 reference letters sent, to [log in to unmask] . Review of applications will begin Aug. 2 and will continue until the position is filled. Inquiries by e-mail or phone (612-626-2047) requesting additional information are also welcome.
