*A study of social and organisational factors that influence delivery of
care for osteoarthritis in primary care.
*
The Arthritis Research UK Primary Care Centre, at Keele has a large and
dynamic research programme in Pain and Osteoarthritis, underpinned by a
thriving Qualitative Research Group that conducts research into the
social dimensions of chronic illness and health care for this. We are
currently developing a study into how and why things become, or don't
become, routine and normal components of everyday work in the general
practice setting. The study will use implementation of osteoarthritis
care as the exemplar and will draw on the Normalisation Process Theory.
Accordingly, case study and qualitative research methods will be used
and the main aims are to investigate:
1. The influences of the social and organisational context on
delivery of new care
2. The way that professionals make sense of the condition and new
treatments.
Funding is available for three or four years (depending on
qualifications and experience) to cover fees for PhD registration
(2010/11 home/EU rates: £3,390) and a research studentship stipend of
currently £13,590 per annum for 2010. Non-EU students would be required
to pay the balance (currently approximately £8,980 per annum) of the
overseas fees themselves). A programme of formal research training will
also be provided.
The successful candidate will be supervised by Dr Clare Jinks and
Professor Pauline Ong. Applicants should have a good first degree (2:1
or above) in sociology or a relevant social science. A Masters degree in
a social science or health related discipline is desirable.
