Dear All,
I would like to take this opportunity to draw your attention to the
postgraduate Medical Ethics courses we offer at Keele University. These
courses are aimed primarily at Healthcare Practitioners, Researchers and
Members of Research Ethics Committees, although we welcome all applications
and consider each on its own merits. All our courses are available part-time
and are taught in intensive three-day blocks in order to be compatible with
full time work and accessible to students throughout the UK and beyond. We
are accepting applications now for the 2010/11 academic year.
Postgraduate Diploma / MA in Medical Ethics and Law
This well-established course provides an opportunity to explore in depth the
challenging ethical and legal issues that health care professionals face in
their work, such as truth-telling and confidentiality; euthanasia; autonomy
and consent; resource allocation; and the impact of the Human Rights Act.
This course is taught in collaboration with Keele University's School of
Law. Next intake October 2010.
Postgraduate Diploma / MA in the Ethics of Cancer and Palliative Care
This course is designed for practitioners and others with a serious interest
in the fields of cancer and palliative care. Major advances in medical
technology, increased expectations, and changing moral attitudes have
combined to generate many complex ethical and legal problems in these areas.
The course provides an opportunity to gain a deeper and more systematic
understanding of these issues, and to explore the moral problems that
practitioners face in their work. This course is taught jointly by the
Centre for Professional Ethics and Marie Curie Cancer Care, and is taught at
the Marie Curie Education Centre in Liverpool. Next intake October 2010.
Postgraduate Certificate / Postgraduate Diploma / MA in Research Ethics
This new course provides an opportunity to explore the ethical issues
arising from a variety of different research methodologies and types of
research - including clinical trials, student research, qualitative research
and research in Higher Education Institutions. It is the most relevant
course in the UK for members of research ethics committees. Next intake
October 2010.
Professional Doctorate in Medical Ethics (DMedEth) (part-time only)
This course is designed for health care professionals who already have a
masters level qualification in Medical Ethics or in a related subject, or
who have substantial experience at a senior level. The professional
doctorate is equivalent in status to a traditional PhD, but includes taught
elements which provide participants with knowledge of a range of research
methods in and approaches to medical ethics. These can then be applied
fruitfully to moral problems and dilemmas encountered in professional
practice. The course will equip experienced healthcare professionals with
the skills needed to produce independent policy- and practice-relevant
medical ethics research. Next intake October 2010.
Short courses
PEAK also offers training and consultancy on a wide range of ethical issues.
We have a range of training courses that are regularly run at Keele and
in-house.
