Good idea, but do you mean to focus on the media of Iran only?
Contemporary Persian radio
programs from the BBC and RFI, inter alia, produced by and for a
trans-national Persophone
audience, as well as programs in Persian aimed at a Tajik (in Tajiki
Persian), or an Afghan
(sometimes labelled Dari, as by Deutsche Welle and VOA), audience are
every bit as interesting
as the ones made in Iran, or those made by the Iranian diaspora in the
Farsi Persian dialect.
Such a class would seem to be a perfect opportunity for educating
students in the range of
vernacular and dialectical variation they might encounter across the
Persophone world. To call,
or focus, the class on "Farsi" seems limiting, somehow like a "Media
Spanish / Castilian Webclass."
I suppose a laser focus on the Persian of Iran might be useful for
diplomats expecting to be
stationed exclusively in Tehran, but if they travel to other regions of
Iran (Khorasan, let's say), or
use Persian on the internet, familiarity with the other forms would
presumably be useful.
