Dear Colleagues,
Stephen Ayre is correct in challenging us to consider whether we
generate a perceived atmosphere of gossip in the workplace. Staff
conversations can drift into reading areas and vice versa. What can we
do about it? Many NHS Libraries are too small to allow adequate zoning
into quiet and vibrant areas, as is the case in HE, or are located in
spaces where such design is restricted. So, investment in better
buildings?
Stephen is also correct to draw attention to the complainant's
perception of what "librarians" do. The duties cited include those
which can be replaced by investment in new technology, such as RFID self
issue. I also agree with Nick (I mean Stephen) in regretting the
absence of referral to higher value activities such as information
literacy facilitation.
However on LIS-Medical we are still having this conversation largely
amongst ourselves: the real challenge is whether we broach this debate
on the HM Govt website itself. In favour: raising the wider issues
Stephen mentions. Against: giving an anecdote more prominence than it
deserves. If we were living in an era of expansion where pushing at the
door would easily yield more investment for RFID and better buildings, I
would go for it. In the current climate, it's probably going to just
lead to a jobs thinning "solution".
