Hi
One of our staff is interested in whether there is any information about the level of alcohol that is acceptable before medication is given generally. It is less to do with the standard texts and sources about Alcohol and medication (BNF, medicines compendium etc.) and I know the individual drug manufacturers have recommendations about alcohol and their drugs; but in working practice, when someone has had just one drink or two but is not intoxicated, staff are frequently called upon to make pragmatic decisions about whether to give medication. It is this type of situation that is of interest.
I have found very little that covers this area except a little in the area of substance abuse and medication adherence where workers are frequently confronted with the dilemma.I have found some discussion about using the drink driving limit with breathalysers. However, I have not found a lot in other settings so would appreciate anything that people might be aware of (local guidelines particularly).
Many thanks
Kind regards
