italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
Scrittrici del Diciannovesimo, Ventesimo e Ventunesimo secolo: attorno
ai Confini e alle Frontiere
University of St Andrews, 21-22 March 2011
Convenors: Dr Rossella Riccobono and Dr Patrizia Sambuco
Special Guest Poet: Antonella Anedda (Rome)
This International Conference offers a unique occasion for Italianists
to meet to discuss Nineteenth- Twentieth and Twenty-first century Women
Writers around an interdisciplinary area of research: the concept of the
`confine´. The Confine, in its significances, can be explored
speculatively both across time and also vis-a-vis modern contemporary
socio-historical, political narrative and poetic writing. The topos of
the Confine, connected to a line of division between two opposite areas
(whether in a geographical, metaphorical, political, genre, or
interior/exterior sense), can be expanded into a symbolic area of
research. The Confine can also be interpreted as a limit, as confinement
to fight and overcome (confinement within domestic walls, political
institutions, or indeed the institution of the convent). Looking at the
Confine from a postcolonial perspective, we come across a zone which
from two-dimensional (a line) expands into a three-dimensional reality
behind which conflicts lurk. It is by studying and writing about these
conflicts that, contraposing parts may be reunited in new unexplored
ways, self and other may be rejoined. But not always. The Confine,
rather than being construed always as a wall marking difference, can
also map new terrain and function as an overlapping area of stories and
histories.
The conference convenors wish to attract panels and papers which
investigate narrative, autobiography, and poetry by Italian women
writers from the Nineteenth century to today, with a particular focus on
the Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Century.
The Conference Proceedings will give birth to a volume containing two
parts: a Critical Apparatus of Introduction and Essays, followed by an
Anthology.
