Perhaps Dorothy Smith's theory of social organisation would help.
She uses institutional ethnography to map the everyday and explicate
how things happen as they do. I think mind-mapping would be a great
way of visually demonstrating social organisation.
Not sure if this helps you but the texts below are very interesting
reading. Smith is a complex writer and so I'd recommend the Campbell
& Gregor text as an intro to institutional ethnography. Dorothy Smith
is an exciting thinker though.

Hi All,
At the moment I am conducting research in use of text-to-speech and
mindmaps technologies by disabled learners (students with dyslexia
and dyspraxia). I was wondering if any of you could suggest any
theories that I can apply to conduct the research and analyse the
data.
Do you know any theories that deal with the effect of visualising
something (for instance a mindmap) as a means to understanding better
something?
Also, are you aware of any theories that deal with the effect of
listening to something that you have just written to increase
understanding?
Thank you for your time reading this and I look forward to hearing
your suggestions.
Regards,
Cristobal
