ESRC/NERC INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDENTSHIP 2010
Socio-Ecological Analysis of Natural Resource Governance:
The Management of Scale, Interplay and Fit in Kinabatangan Wildlife
Sanctuary, Malaysia
Applications are being sought for a prestigious (+3) full-time ESRC/NERC
Interdisciplinary Studentship, to be based in the Cardiff School of Social
Sciences at Cardiff University, to begin in October 2010.
Supervisors will be Professor Susan Baker (School of Social Sciences) and
Professor Mike Bruford (School of Biosciences).
The project will address the management of ecosystems in the context of the
complex interplay between social, economic and ecological needs. The
research aims to reduce the apparent governance 'misfit' between physical
environments/ecosystems, and social institutions.
Empirically, the research will focus on the Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary
in Eastern Sabah (Malaysia) and its conservation plans. This is the location
of a Cardiff University sponsored Danau Girang Field Centre. Dr Benoît
Goossens, Director of the Field Centre, and Dr. Marc Ancrenaz (Founder,
Kinabatangan Orang-utan Conservation Project and Honorary Fellow, School of
Biosciences) will act as on-site co-supervisors.

Information about the Schools: Cardiff School of Social Sciences is a large
School with over 160 staff and a thousand undergraduate and postgraduate
students. The 2008 Research Assessment Exercise rated almost all of its
research to be of an international standard, with 55% of it either "world
leading" or "internationally excellent". This rating, together with the size
of the School, places it amongst the top five centres in the UK. Since its
creation in 2000, the School has attracted over £18 million of research
funds.
The Cardiff School of Biosciences is one of the largest bioscience
departments in the UK with over 100 academic staff, 150 research staff, more
than 160 postgraduates and 2000 undergraduate students. Supported by
state-of-the-art facilities, its topical courses and cutting-edge research
spans the full range of biology from whole (eco) systems to molecular
biology. In recent years, the School has annually been awarded new research
grants totalling £10 million. The School provides a dynamic and stimulating
research environment with impressive modern facilities and high-calibre
research-active staff.
Eligibility: Candidates should have an excellent academic background, in
ether the natural or social sciences, holding a 1st or upper 2nd class
degree and a Masters degree (preferably an ESRC recognised Master's or an
equivalent background in research training). UK Research Council eligibility
conditions apply (awards are open to UK Nationals, and EU students who can
satisfy UK residency requirements. To be eligible for the full award, EU
Nationals must have been in the UK for at least 3 years prior to the start
of the course for which they are seeking funding, including for the purposes
of full-time education).
Funding: Full UK/EU tuition fees paid, £15,290 p.a. living stipend and
£1000 p.a. Research and Training allowance.
