Hi Jenny
Prior to around 1900 ash was commonly used as a filtration medium at
sewage works. Ash might derive from a variety of sources so I would
suggest that if you have an older sewage works, try looking at
surrounding industries of relevant date to determine possible ash
sources and potential contaminants.
ICRCL guidance is attached for reference only (as it is currently
withdrawn). In this guidance, secondary treatments - bilogical
filtration & activated sludge are mentioned.
Section 11 of the ICRCL guidance suggests that biological filtration is
an older method likely to have been used on sewage works sites now
available for redevelopment. Section 12 suggests that biological
filtration used coarse granular material (eg coke, clinker, foamed blast
furnace slag)through which liquid sewage percolated.
The World Bank Group Pollution & Prevention Handbook (see below -
effective 1998) indicates that blast furnace residues commonly contain
elevated levels of Pb & Zn:

You might look at Pb & Zn.

Subject: Sewage Works
Dear All
I have been asked by one of our Client to complete some testing on an
old sewage works, I have reviewed the industrial profile for said usage
and see there is a variety of potential contaminants. I was wondering if
anyone had any experience in relation to what is most likely to be
present on said sites. I understand from our client that the site
comprised of a large number of filter beds as you would expect.
I would appreciate any help which can be offered.
Thanks
