project funded by the Research Council of K.U. Leuven, Belgium. Our
research group (the dept of Greek philology and the De Wulf-Mansion
centre for ancient, medieval and renaissance philosophy) is involved in
the recently established centre "LECTIO. The Leuven Centre for the Study
of the Transmission of Texts and Ideas in Antiquity, the Middle Ages and
the Renaissance".
Candidates will be asked to do doctoral research into the the
influence of philosophical theories of matter on 5th-9th c. byzantine
treatises on the combination of body and soul. The text corpus is a
little known and largely unedited collection of texts, influenced by
Gregory of Nyssa and Nemesius of Emesa, but with many
medical/scientific/philosophical side issues. The texts will be edited
by the promoters and another collaborator. The aim of the part of the
project concerned in this announcement is to study the sources of the
texts, within the framework of the development of a Christian
anthropology in Early Middle Ages.
The project starts on Oct. 1, 2010.
