I am looking to organise a panel for the joint conference of the Association
for Asian Studies and the International Convention of Asia Scholars in
Honolulu* *running from the 31st of March until the 3rd of April 2011.
The proposed topic for the panel is as follows:
*Making and remaking of (self) image - Asian migration, agency, and the
state*
The influence of migration on economies, cultures, and social relations in
countries across the globe is undeniable. Given that a great proportion of
migrant flows originate in Asian countries it is important to know how and
to what extent these Asian arrivals partake in shaping the host countries’
stance on immigration. This panel proposes to explore these issues focusing
on the making and remaking of images held by both the host societies and the
Asian migrant groups. The images delimit who the two groups are and give
tone to their relationship, but are by no means static: both of the parties
are influential agents in (re)constructing ideas about each other and about
themselves. The platform for the articulation of the ideas can be provided
by a variety of actors, two examples of which are the media and the more or
less organised civil society groups. What role then do the migrants play in
the formation of their own public image? What function can be assigned to
the host society’s self image and the images it holds about migrants among
themselves? What are the channels through which these images circulate, who
affects the images’ shape in the process, and how exactly does the change
happen? Finally, how can we connect this making and remaking of images to
the question of how the official debates surrounding the international
labour migration are being shaped in the countries of destination?
The deadline for submitting a panel proposal is August the 5th, so if you
would like to participate as a speaker or discussant, please send me a 250
word proposal of your paper as soon as possible to

together with your name, address, e-mail, and institutional affiliation.
I would greatly appreciate an expression of interest from senior scholars in
order to balance the number of junior and senior participants in the panel.
