Fully Funded PhD Studentship (including stipend of £13,600 p.a. tax free)
Cranfield University at the Defence Academy of the UK, Shrivenham
Available for research in one of the following areas, starting in October 2010:
Reasoning with Uncertain Evidence
This project is concerned with investigating quantitative approaches to reasoning with evidence which may be uncertain, partial, contradictory and come from sources of varying credibility. Bayesian networks offer one potential approach which will be explored in conjunction with various other methods. Of particular interest is how such approaches can be used to support investigators within law enforcement agencies. For example, interest might focus on the way in which such approaches can be combined with visualisation and explanation facilities to support the human reasoning process or on the marshalling of evidence to construct a case.
Adversarial Reasoning
This project is concerned with investigating quantitative approaches to situations involving an intelligent adversary. Situations involving military conflict provide an obvious application area, as do problems involving competition in business and industry, for example. Traditional game theory suffers from a number of restrictive assumptions in many real-world situations where uncertainty, bounded rationality and deception are prevalent. While various extensions to traditional game theory have been formulated and applied, there is considerable scope for alternative approaches based on probabilistic graphical models to be investigated and developed.
Applicants should have a good degree and ideally an MSc in operational research, statistics, mathematics, computer science or a closely related subject. They should also have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Some programming experience is desirable.
To apply, send a CV and covering letter or e-mail, detailing which of these areas interest you and why. These should be sent to Dr Ken McNaught ([log in to unmask]), Decision Analysis and Risk Modelling Lab, Dept of Engineering Systems and Management, Cranfield University, Defence Academy of the UK, Shrivenham, Swindon SN6 8LA. These should be received by 2 August 2010. Informal enquiries are welcome.
You may leave the list at any time by sending the command
