Lecturer in Actuarial/Financial Mathematics
(Available January 2011, but a later date may be negotiated)
You will contribute to the teaching and research activities of the School of
Mathematics (and associated administrative duties) in the area of Actuarial
and Financial Mathematics. You must possess a PhD (or equivalent) in
Actuarial/Financial Mathematics or a related area (in particular Statistics)
and be able to demonstrate teaching ability in Actuarial/Financial
Mathematics at the BSc level. Good communication and interpersonal
skills, including written and presentational, and the ability to work as a
member of a team are also essential to the post.

Areas of Responsibility
You will be expected to undertake the following roles to a high standard:
# To carry out research of a collaborative nature in Actuarial or Financial
Mathematics within the School of Mathematics; in particular working with
PhD students and researchers in Actuarial/Financial Mathematics.
# To contribute to teaching and associated administrative activities, within
the BSc Actuarial Mathematics / Mathematics with Finance and the MSc
Actuarial Finance / Financial Mathematics (joint with the Leeds University
Business School). The lecturer is in particular responsible for teaching
lectures and tutorials for the undergraduate modules Actuarial
Mathematics 1 and 2. An active role in curriculum development is
expected.
Teaching and Learning Support
# Design teaching material and deliver either across a range of modules or
within a subject area.
# Use appropriate teaching, learning support and assessment methods.
# Supervise student projects.
# Plan, design and develop objectives and material.
# Set, mark and assess work and examinations and provide feedback to
students.
# Contribute to the accreditation of courses and quality control processes.
# Use a range of delivery techniques to enthuse and engage students.
# Extend, transform and apply knowledge acquired from scholarship and own
research to teaching, research and appropriate external activities.
# Conduct module reviews on a regular basis to identify areas where current
provision is in need of revision or improvement.
Analysis, Research and Scholarship
# Develop research objectives, projects and proposals and conduct individual
or collaborative research projects.
# To generate research income from external funding sources.
# Act as a referee and contribute peer assessment on an occasional basis for
appropriate journals/publications.
# You will be expected to contribute your own inputs into the research
programme.
# To publish research findings in appropriate peer-reviewed journals of
international
standing; and to disseminate the results of your scholarship in other
outlets.
# To contribute fully to research planning and development within the
School.
Administration
# To take an active part in the administration of the School’s programmes of
study and other activities.
# To act as a mentor to colleagues with less experience, as required.
# To manage projects relating to own area of work.
# To effectively organise own work, prioritising as appropriate.
# To act as academic personal tutor to assigned students within the
School and
to assist more generally in student support.
# Engage in continuous professional development, to underpin area of
expertise.
