Dear colleagues,
Earlier this week I sent out the following enquiry:
Dear colleagues,
One of our staff has had a paper published in a high-ranking journal.
Unfortunately they spelt her surname wrong. The journal has published a
correction, but obviously what people citing her article will see is the
incorrect spelling. One person has contacted her to ask how she would
like the article to be cited.
Has anyone come across this problem before? We have not found any
guidance in our usual places for dealing with tricky citations. In the
current climate there are obviously implications for the bibliometrics
aspect of the research assessment if her surname is cited in a number of
different ways.
My thanks to those who responded. In the end this is what I sent to our
reader, who seemed content with the advice:
1. The article should be cited as published. This is how it appears in
Medline/Pubmed and Web of Science. Medline/Pubmed should include the
fact that there is a correction in due course, but it has not done so
yet. Despite the correction the article is likely to be cited using the
wrong spelling in future. Where an email address is given in a database,
it does include the correct spelling of your name so the mistake will be
obvious to those who are really interested in your work.
2. To have the article credited to you when it is cited, you should
create a Researcher ID in Web of Science. The profile there allows you
to bring together all variants of your name:
"Other Names: If you've published under different names or if you are
known by more than one name, enter Other Names. These will be searched
if made public."
As Web of Science is heavily used in research assessment exercises, this
should mean that the "rogue" spelling does not affect your ratings.
If your library uses SCOPUS (we don't) you might need to advise
equivalent action there.
If I get further advice I'll let you know.
