Dear all,
In a few weeks time, I will commence teaching a unit entitled 'Family Studies and Disability' on the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood and Primary) program at Australian Catholic University here in Melbourne, Australia.
My first degree was in Disability Studies and Childhood Studies (undertaken at Northumbria Uni, UK) and as such I am passionate about the social model of disability and the theoretical framework this can provide for challenging stereotypical/medical/personal tragedy understandings of disability and impairment.
In particular, I am extremely keen to ensure that our pre-service teachers are provided with materials that challenge their perceptions of family's experiences of having 'disabled children/children with disabilities'. Traditionally, research has focussed on the 'negative' experiences family's encounter and I wish to provide an alternative.
I would welcome any suggestions that you may have.
Many thanks in advance for your time,
Millie
