Cheers Mike and Ray for your replys
There I was thinking I was just behind in the e-learning world!
When I spoke to the tutor, it is clear the e-portfolios are for academic assessment, as well as future showcasing. I don't know who is setting this standard as such, but I think I may need to talk to the External Verifiers (who are uncouraging that more course use this layout & E-portfolios). I would think that they should be able to offer some guidance, guide lines or good practice seen elsewhere.
Regards
Ty

Tyrone, and Mike,
These are some of the issues I intend addressing at the EIfEL conference and
again in Boston, Ma, next month. See:
http://www.epforum.eu/
http://www.aaeebl.org/page/AAEEBL+Annual+Conference
My short answer if not very helpful is the anecdote about the farmhand's
response to the tourist asking for directions, "If you are going there, I
wouldn't start from here!"
But seriously, the first issue is that of whether the e-Portfolio is deemed
to be primarily an institution-owned assessment tool or is it something
owned by the learner?
If the e-Portfolio is embedded within a VLE then, as you identify, there are
serious problems not only about 'longevity', 'ownership' and 'portability'
but also about showcasing and continued PDP.
If the e-Portfolio is learner-owned then there needs to be some agreement on
uniformity otherwise you create an impossible job for peers, tutors, mentors
and assessors. I do not feel that cloud solutions or Wordpress meet the
wider variety of e-Portfolio functionalities including such things as audit
trails, feedback tools etc.
I'm not trying to sell a product, but see my links below, particularly my
blog.

Hiya,
This is not going to help much, but we've managed to avoid the issue
somewhat because undergrad students have enough to do completing a clinical
portfolio. Now we're trying to move forward with some kind of e-portfolio I
am leaning towards offering them to use the (fairly nasty) VLE-based
platform or some support for them to 'do it themselves' via tumblr or
wordpress... or even a shared dropbox folder with word docs inside. In this
way we could ensure students take responsibility for their own portfolio....
may even promote ownership/engagement with the reflective process (which is
what we ought to really be concerned about, right?). It's also portable and
durable in a way that I have yet to trust classic e-portfolio systems to be.
Best wishes,
Mike

Dear All
I am contacting you in the hope of finding out how you deal
with E-Portfolios
A colleague has insisted that he wants this academic years
course code left ‘live’ for another 1 / 2 years, so that the
students can show potential employers and for the purpose of external
verifiers. Some of my concerns are the continued access of the college
system
by students, and the time required to remove the support courses from their
profile.
We don’t host our own Blackboard area, and I
can’t seem to find a way of exporting the students work / assignments
/
e-portfolio. The Grade centre results aren’t going to be enough.
I am also worried that the cost of our Blackboard will go up
with the amount of users.
So my question is how do you tackle E-portfolios, do you use
blackboard or another source/method? Any advice at all is much appreciated.
Many, many thanks
Ty
