Dear Everyone,
I would like to ask for people's ideas, advice and suggestions for a new
planning course at Master level that I am considering developing here in
Groningen, The Netherlands. Your reactions to a similar request in
January this year for a Philosophies, Human Geography and Planning
course were extremely insightful and very much appreciated!
The new course will engage learners with critical questions concerning
the ethical responsibilities of care in the context of
neoliberalization, extension of market relations and the erosion of
public provision of services and support in key areas of social life.
Drawing tendentiously at this stage on notions of "relational ethics"
(Held 2004; Slote 2007), "postsecular ethics" (Beaumont and Cloke in
progress) and "geographies of care and responsibility" (Condradson 2003;
Popke 2006; Lawson 2007), the proposed /planning /course addresses
problems such as the extension of market relations, poverty,
unemployment, famine and injustice, (un)natural disasters, environmental
destruction and cultural degradation and explores how /spatial planning
for care and responsibility /can contribute to the mitigation of their
worst excesses, most deleterious effects and even prevention.
If you have suggestions for topics, approaches, assignments or anything
for that matter that could be used for the course I would be most
interested in hearing from you. Moreover, if you are teaching or have
taught a similar course and you have experiences that you are willing to
share I would be delighted to learn from you. Many thanks in advance for
your replies!
With kind regards,
Justin Beaumont
