Senior Scott Shambaugh's pinch-hit three-run homer highlighted the six-run
fifth inning as the visiting Bees recently defeated the Claflin University
Panthers 14-4 in Orangeburg, S.C. A typical college baseball game on a
typical spring day, except for the fact that the Bees attend an art
school, the Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia. Are you more
surprised that an art school has a varsity athletics program, or that
artists can play ball?
The Savannah college has had an athletics department, currently fielding
teams in 16 men's and women's varsity sports, for 20 years, and the
department awards partial athletic scholarships. Since 2009, the school
even has instituted a Bachelor of Arts degree program in equestrian
studies (riding, not drawing pictures of horses). Savannah, however, is
not the only independent art college that takes sports seriously. The
athletics department of the Academy of Art University in San Francisco
fields 14 varsity teams at the NCAA Division II level, and the women's
basketball team occasionally plays a Division I team like the University
of San Francisco. "USF is a reach for us, but we do well against schools
in our conference," said the university's athletics director, Jamie
Williams. For the 2009-10 season, the women's basketball team posted a
10-17 record overall, finishing fifth in the Pacific West Conference
standings.
Most art schools don't take their athletics quite as seriously. Cooper
Union in Manhattan, for instance, considers its main basketball, soccer
and tennis rivals to be Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and the Rhode Island
School of Design, and the Philadelphia-based University of the Arts is
strongest in intramural dodgeball. However, there is an increasing
interest in encouraging sports and fitness at highly specialized colleges
that traditionally have not had the range of extracurricular activities
found in liberal-arts colleges and universities. "It's not just sports.
Any kind of activity tends to help build an affinity with the school,
prevents people from dropping out and improves their academic
performance," said William Barrett, executive director of the Association
of Independent Colleges of Art and Design. Sports, however, increase
students' commitment and involvement in their schools on an emotional
level.
