Full-time ESRC/CASE LINKED MRES + PhD studentship
The Role of Assistive Technology in Enabling Families to Care for Relatives with Dementia in their Location of Choice.
Institute of Gerontology, King’s College London
Applications are invited for a funded four-year full-time ESRC CASE studentship comprising a linked MRes Gerontology (1 year) and PhD (3 years), commencing October 2010. Previous applicants need not re-apply.
The project will examine how Assistive Technologies (AT) can be used in the context of personal care for older people in providing assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as dressing, feeding and getting in and out of bed; and how AT can play a positive role in enabling those caring for a relative with dementia to make preferred choices as to whether their relatives remain at home or move to a residential home. This PhD will be supervised by Dr. Karen Glaser and Professor Anthea Tinker (IoG).
The Institute of Gerontology, King’s College London, is a leading multi-disciplinary department for research and teaching into the study of ageing and is an ESRC recognised research outlet. More information about the Institute and its strands of research can be found here: http://www.kcl.ac.uk/schools/sspp/geront/. The studentship is offered in partnership with AgeCare.
It is anticipated that successful applicants will have a first degree at first class or 2:1 level or the equivalent standard from a European or Overseas University. Students who already have a Masters degree are encouraged to apply; however this degree cannot be from an ESRC recognised research training course.
Students must meet the ESRC’s strict academic and UK residential eligibility requirements (please see www.esrc.ac.uk for clarification if necessary). In the first year of the studentship, the student will receive a maintenance grant of approximately £17,000 and full fees for the MRes. For each year of the PhD the student will receive the same maintenance grant, full fees for the PhD, and an additional £3,000 from our partner AgeCare.
All applicants for the studentship must complete the application form by the deadline of the 9th July 2010. Informal enquiries by email are welcome, contact [log in to unmask] or [log in to unmask] For more details and an application form please see http://www.kcl.ac.uk/graduate/funding/database/index.php?action=view&id=337.
