Confusion is subtle to enslaved minds
willing to accept preposterous terms
of engagement. They do not like arguing.
Even when bosses contradict themselves,
they will deny it’s happened, in pursuit
of another person’s self-assurance.
And no one does anything that’s productive.
There are far too many of them to resist.
I don’t deserve this, she keeps on saying.
I don’t deserve it. Really, I do not.
The words are free of a ground-meaning,
swinging near, as if they have a purpose.
Some of the team are saying one set thing
and the rest say the opposite: in good balance.

Bartender: You really think the world's gonna end?
Ford: Yes.
Bartender: Shouldn't we lie down? Put paper bags over our heads or something?
Ford: If you like.
Bartender: Would it help?
Ford: Not at all.
