Amanda and Sharon,
Thank you so much, that is really helpful. I am seeing him on Monday and at
least now I feel more equipped to understand his recovery needs and also to
assess his ability to return to work.
Chris

I can`t be any more optimistic than Sharon. I currently have a dental nurse
off for similar time /similar surgery. She came in to see the OHP this week
and is still struggling to sit/stand /lie down for any length of time. At
least I haven`t got to try and get her back to a manual job so can`t help
there - she`s only got to stand/sit around all day but even that is going to
be impossible to imagine at the moment,
Amanda

Poor bloke. I would anticipate absence of 10 - 12 weeks dependant on how he
heals (maybe longer). Also depends on how they closed the fissures, how
many, how long he had had them ,whether there are any left open to granulate
(seems to be popular at the moment) and also if he had any other procedures
such as botox (also de rigeur at the moment it seems). Suggest GP report to
see exactly what he had done might be useful. Another aspect may be that he
could have problems with his bowels at the moment - my last case similar to
this was on so many laxatives to keep everything "fluid" and easy to pass
that he was very prone to leakage and occasional incontinence. Definately
affected his desire to return to the working environment................
A very generalised statement - I would probably recommend a phased return
to his normal hours over 3 - 4 weeks on restricted duties, during that time
would think that all the duties listed below may be contraindicated. Problem
is that with this kind of op the "wounds" can easily break down and re-open
with movement, getting sweaty etc . You may be talking weeks before he can
do "normal " duties. Not sure how that would sit with his employer and there
would need to be alternatie duties for him to do. there may well be someone
out there with better knowledge about this than me though and may be more
optimistic.....
