Bursaries for teaching, museum and outreach professionals on Saturday 24th July 2010, University of Aberdeen
Do you teach or communicate the history of science, technology or medicine to under-18s or the wider public? Do you want to know more about cutting-edge learning resources and techniques in the field? Then why not sign up for the Outreach Day at the annual conference of the BSHS at the University of Aberdeen. Some special BSHS bursaries are available, and you might be eligible for one.
Outreach Day Programme
9.30 - Welcome
10.00 - Grants From OEC. The Outreach and Education committee offers small grants for individuals developing projects. This session is an opportunity to find out about applying for an grant and to share good practiced in planning, delivering and evaluating outreach projects.
11.30 - Engaging Audiences at Aberdeen Museums. Aberdeen Art Gallery & Museums have broad collections of local science, technology and industry artefacts and a strong track record of public engagement. This presentation will use case studies to demonstrate how the museums service is engaging the audiences. Participants will also be invited to take part in an abbreviated "hands-on history" workshop.
2 - Making the perfect war horse: exploring object-centered events for adult audiences
A French maker of anatomical models in the nineteenth century, Louis Auzoux , branched out into animal models and letters between Auzoux and a military horse expert are used in this session to situate the Auzoux horse models in the context of public debate over the horse as a military technology.
4.15 – Songs of Science. Ranging across historical periods, geographic locations, musical and lyrical genres, disciplinary divisions, and degrees of expertise, many different cultures have embraced the choral possibilities of the natural and technological worlds. In this 'Outreach Day' session our speakers (and singers) will introduce a few outstanding examples of these historic songs of science, exploring the humorous, celebratory, poetic - and bathetic
