ANNOUNCEMENT
ASCE partners with CLOCKSS to Digitally Archive ASCE Journal Content
June 8, 2010 -- CLOCKSS and the American Society of Civil Engineers
(ASCE) are pleased to announce their partnership to preserve the ASCE
journals in the CLOCKSS archive. CLOCKSS is a long-term dark archive
that preserves digital scholarly content for the very long term.
CLOCKSS will preserve ASCE’s 32 journals in its geographically and
geopolitically distributed network of redundant archive nodes, located
at 11 major research libraries around the world. ASCE will place over
33,000 articles in the archive, including backfile materials dating
back to 1983.
In the event that any ASCE journal becomes unavailable from a
publisher, CLOCKSS will make this abandoned and orphaned content
available for free, under a Creative Commons license, to all scholars
around the world. By archiving with CLOCKSS, ASCE ensures that its
journals remain as useful as possible and will always be available to
all scholars around the world.
“ASCE’s agreement with CLOCKSS supports our commitment to the
long-term preservation and future accessibility of ASCE electronic
journal content through digital archiving,” said Bruce Gossett,
Managing Director of ASCE Publications. “As libraries continue to rely
more heavily on electronic resources, this agreement allows for a
transition to electronic content without sacrificing the library's
traditional preservation mandate.”
CLOCKSS Co-Chair and Executive Director Gordon Tibbitts adds, “CLOCKSS
has achieved a rare consensus among libraries and publishers to make
triggered content open access. We are grateful to ASCE for its
generous willingness to preserve its journals in a way that secures
them for the long-term good of scholars worldwide.”
