Dear Tim,
I'm pleased to hear Royal Holloway is interested in the UK LOCKSS Alliance.
From late 2010, LOCKSS will be made available only as a software package for installation under Linux. A motivating factor in this has been to provide more flexible options for installation and configuration of LOCKSS alongside a library's existing hardware infrastructure.
We recommend all Linux platforms for LOCKSS run on a dedicated or virtual machine instance with at least two cores, 2GB of RAM and 2TB of disk or better. If you are looking to acquire a machine capable of running virtual machine instances, please consider a machine with two cores, 2GB of RAM and 2TB of disk space for every instance you plan to run on the machine.
Rather than projecting a total estimate of required storage capacity, we encourage you to source a machine into which expansion disks can be installed. Buying storage when needed tends to prove a more cost-effective approach than up front purchase. SAN storage is not required.
For further information on running LOCKSS on Linux, please take a look at:

If I can provide further information, please get in touch. If you (or others) would like further information on the UK LOCKSS Alliance, please visit either the UK LOCKSS Alliance website at:

Or the recently launched JISC Collections membership information page at:

Best regards,
Adam
