AGM of the Career Development Group (West Country Division) followed by International Talks and Tour of the new Medical Library at Southmead Hospital, Bristol
Thursday 1st July 2010 2.00pm-5.00pm
You are invited to attend an exciting afternoon of international librarianship, a guided tour of the newly refurbished medical library and the West Country AGM to be held on Thursday 1st July starting at 2.00pm. Come and find out about the experiences of West Country librarians visiting and having an impact on libraries overseas. The two speakers will be discussing their recent visits and how these libraries differ from our own. Jane Villa is a medical librarian who works in Frenchay Hospital library and Johanna Anderson is an Information Adviser at the University of Gloucestershire. After the talks there will be an opportunity to have a tour around a medical library which has recently been built. This event would be particularly useful to chartership candidates as it helps develop knowledge of the wider profession.
Evidence-based Healthcare, developing skills in Kenya: Jane Villa is the Library Services Manager from North Bristol NHS Trust. She recently spent a week in Kenya primarily to run a 2 day workshop at The University of Nairobi on "Evidence-based Healthcare: the role of the librarian". The trip also involved visiting several health libraries in Kenya including a research library, a city hospital and a rural hospital and nursing school north of Nairobi. Whilst she was there she saw first hand the differences between healthcare libraries in the UK and Africa.
A Malawian School Library: Culture, Literacy and Reader Development: Johanna Anderson is a 2010 graduate of UWE's Information and Library Management MSc programme. Her main area of interest is the contribution that library and information professionals can make to international development agendas, particularly the Millennium Development Goals. Her research for her MSc dissertation took her to Malawi where she investigated the success and suitability of a Western-donated school library in furthering the aims of literacy and reader development in Malawi.
