BioMed Central recognizes leaders in open access publishing
The winners of BioMed Central's 4th Annual Research Awards were announced at London's Swiss Re Tower last week. The awards, now in their fourth year, acknowledge excellence in research that has been made universally accessible by open access publication. These awards were particularly special this year as BioMed Central also celebrates its 10th anniversary.
In addition to the award categories recognizing groundbreaking research, BioMed Central also presented the Open Access Institute of the Year. This award recognizes institutions which have done most to show leadership in taking steps to expand access to the published results of scholarly research. This year, to reflect the global spread of open access initiatives, it was decided to recognize three institutions: the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Harvard University and the University of Zurich. Full details of the award winners can be found at the research awards website (http://www.biomedcentral.com/researchawards/winners/#).
Speaking of their award, the University of Zurich's, Christian Fuhrer said: 'We are proud to receive this award. The prize honours the international visibility of the University and its long-lasting support of Open Access. The University was among the first universities to sign the Berlin Declaration in 2004 and to adopt an Open Access policy in 2005. The institutional repository ZORA shows the University's research output, and a University-hosted database on authors rights as well as an Open Access website help researchers to publish with Open Access. The prize will further illustrate to researchers and the public in Zurich and elsewhere that it is not only important to publish excellent results, but to care about the widest possible dissemination of these results.'
Bev Acreman, Commercial Director of BioMed Central, said " We are delighted to have the opportunity to recognize institutions which have done most to show leadership in taking steps to expand access to the scholarly research. Each institution has shown its commitment to open access in different ways but all of them over a number of years. It is their activism in general, and support of BioMed Central in particular, which allows us to continue to lead the way in open access publishing."
