italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
No secrets, Anthony,
I just wanted to give to Deanna some references I do not have 'here.'
The answer is: yes! during the Renaissance there are several examples,
in Italy, but not only Italy, of stairs between the stage and the audience.
In some Florentine sacred play, non professional actors were part of
the the audience
at the beginning of the show, and then they were with the
(non professional) actors on the stage. This happened also in early
Renaissance 'lay' theatre.
In some case, the stage and the scene were inspired by
the rediscovery (and the re-interpretation, above all)
of Vitruvius, as we can see in Serlio's very famous "tragic" and
"comic" scenes printed in Paris in 1545 (you can find them online)
In general: in Renaissance sacred theatre (not only
Italian, not only Sacreed theatre)
there are examples of an osmosis stage / audience.
I do not remember now what El Greco's painting Deanna was talking about.
Maybe it might be also interesting to consider the theatres ("teatri
provvisori") built in occasion of the so called "abiurae" in front of
the Church of the Minerva in Rome. I remember there is a description
of such 'theatre' but I cannot remember anything about the
iconography, sorry.
some (excellent) references:
Ludovico Zorzi. Il teatro e la città (cap. II: Firenze, il teatro e il
città), Torino: Einaudi, 1977 [I am not able to give the numbers of the
pages, unfortunately] and Sara Mamone. Il teatro della Firenze
medicea. Milano: Mursia, 1981 (pages?).
I recommend also the literature on Spanish sacred theatre,
and on Spanish 'corrales' (architecture, stages etc.) (See also any
good book on
sacred theatre iconography or on sacred theatre 'tout court').
Btw...since old classic theatre (Roman-Latin) scenes (that we can see
on painted vases 'et similia')
we have examples of stairs between the stage and the audience, and of
an 'osmosis' between
the audience and the stage.
Spero d'esserti stato d'aiuto, Antonio.
best, cari saluti,
gianni
