Research Fellow, University of Birmingham
Health Economics Unit, School of Health and Population Sciences
Fixed term post for 15 months in the first instance
Applications are sought from enthusiastic individuals to join one of the UK's leading Health
Economics Units. This is a 15-month post in the first instance but could be extended on the basis
of either potential success with submitted grant proposals or by an application for a PhD
studentship. The post will comprise two stages; the first stage will involve 6-months of pilot
work prior to the start of a 5-year RCT to ascertain the appropriate economic outcome measure to
use in the trial. The trial is designed to assess the (cost)-effectiveness of a school-based
intervention to prevent obesity in children and thus has a strong public health focus. The first
stage will involve a literature review, identification and recruitment of population cohorts to
ensure representation from parent, teacher and a child perspective to conduct qualitative
research. This will be analysed to help inform the selection of economic outcome instrument to be
used in the trial. The second stage will involve direct input into the set-up of the trial with
the development of resource-use questionnaires and a review of unit cost data for this unique
setting (school-based intervention). During this second stage the post holder will also conduct a
small scale benefit elicitation study using techniques such as willingness to pay and/or discrete
choice experiments to measure the demand for the intervention.
Starting salary £27,319 to £35,646a year (potential pregression on performance once in post to
£37,839).
