Two Junior Researcher Positions in Geodesy
(fully funded PhD studentship with employee status)
With immediate effect the Geophysics Laboratory at the University of
Luxembourg would like to announce the availability of two fully funded PhD
research studentships in the topic area of geodesy. Within the team's remit,
which includes climate variability, geodynamics, resource management and
regional processes, we seek to advance the techniques in the area of high
precision Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS/GPS) to applications in
natural hazard warning systems (GPS seismology), sea level change and ice
mass changes, glacial isostatic adjustment, plate tectonics and gravity
field variations. The proposed research topics cover the areas from
real-time, high-rate GNSS precise point positioning to GNSS
observation-level model improvements and time series analysis for long-term,
global monitoring applications.
Candidates will have a strong background in earth sciences (geophysics),
surveying, mathematics, physics, physical geography or engineering, and
should be fluent in English. Knowledge of the German or French languages are
a bonus but are not a requirement. It is expected that the candidates have
or will acquire in-depth knowledge of Linux, programming languages and
scientific GPS software during their research. The funding is provided for
two years initially and for a maximum of four years.
The Geophysics Laboratory carries out world leading research in the
monitoring and interpretation of geophysical processes using space geodetic
and gravity measurements, works in locations such as Greenland and
Antarctica and has an excellent publication track record. The recent
addition of Professor Norman Teferle to the Geophysics Laboratory added
further expertise in the areas of GPS processing and time series analysis.
The University of Luxembourg offers a personal, dynamic, multilingual and
multicultural environment with a strong focus on research. Being located in
the heart of Europe, access to other European countries is easy and
Luxembourg was recently voted one of the top university cities within
Europe.
The deadline for applications is 30 June 2010.
For informal enquiries please contact Norman Teferle.
