Dear all,
I am writing about developments at the Information Centre about Asylum
and Refugees (ICAR) and to ask for your support in securing the future
of our work.
Our host institution, City University, is making savings due to central
government cuts across the Higher Education sector and has formally
announced that it can no longer support ICAR. A mistake in our view, and
in the view of many who expressed their support for ICAR from both
within and without the university as part of a campaign to save ICAR.
But our objections have been to no avail and we will be leaving the
University on July 7th 2010.
However we have been kindly offered a lifeline by the Runnymede Trust,
which is ready to host the ICAR team if we can raise a small amount of
transfer costs. This potential move will not only save ICAR from
closure, but also promises to be an exciting new partnership that pools
a wealth of skills and expertise in the complimentary fields of race
equality and asylum.
With the new change in government we believe that many key asylum policy
issues, such as access to justice, detention, deportation, the role of
the EU, and integration and citizenship, will remain in the spotlight
and continue to impact on refugee, migrant and established UK
populations. We think therefore that ICAR’s contribution to promoting
responsible and well-informed debate in this area will be needed as much
as ever.
Under the new arrangement ICAR would continue to operate as an
independent centre, as now, while benefiting from and contributing to
the running costs and management support of Runnymede. However we need
to raise an additional £15,000 to contribute towards transfer and the
first 6 months operational costs, on top of the £60,000 which we are
currently requesting from existing funders.
More details on the appeal can be found at

and you can donate directly online:

(all money received will be ring-fenced for ICAR).
We would be grateful if you would forward this request to your contacts.
If you need any more information about how you can help, please contact
myself or any other member of ICAR staff.
Thank you for your support.
