ESRC-funded Seminar Series ‘Fairness at Work’
You are invited to register to attend the first in a new ESRC-funded seminar series about ‘Fairness at Work’.
Seminar 1: The concept of ‘fairness’ in the employment contract and working conditions
Date and time: July 9th 2010, 10.00 - 4.30, Venue: The University of Manchester, Harold Hankings Building, Room 10.09
• Professor Simon Deakin (University of Cambridge) The Capability Approach and Fairness at Work
• Professor Andrew Sayer (University of Lancaster) Contributive Justice, Capabilities and Equal Opportunity in Employment
• Dr Sangheon Lee (International Labour Office) Decent Work as a Policy Research Framework: potentials, achievements and challenges
• Dr Anne-Marie Greene (Warwick Business School) The Dynamics of Managing Diversity
Fair treatment at work is a key issue for policy makers, the business community, trade unions and employees. Whether or not employment conditions and organisational practices are ‘fair’ affects the quality of workplace relationships, which may in turn impact on the productivity and other operational considerations. Fairness at work also makes a key contribution to the quality of life and the sustainability of society more broadly, for example for their impact on living standards, the extent and form of social inequality, and the reconciliation of employment with care responsibilities.
This new seminar series aims to advance our understanding of ‘fairness’ – and related concepts such as ‘organisational justice’ and ‘corporate social responsibility’ – across pertinent academic disciplines (economics, industrial relations, law, organisational psychology, sociology…) and practice (collective bargaining, personnel policy, legislation…). We will also explore potential tensions and synergies in relation to ‘fairness’ across different interest groups (employers, employees, customers/service users) differences within the workforce (such as those with and without care responsibilities) and between households, firms and state public policy.
The seminars will provide a forum for researchers, policy makers and others with an interest in understanding, developing and evaluating ideas about notions of ‘fairness’ in contemporary workplaces and labour markets. We hope to debate and exchange ideas about the meaning of fairness; to stimulate dialogue and networks between researchers and research-users beyond the immediacy of the seminar meetings; and to advance research and policy agendas in this field.
The other seminars to be held in 2010 and 2011 are as follows
• Seminar 2: Fairness in diversity and equal treatment policies
• Seminar 3: Fairness between different groups of workers
• Seminar 4: Health, safety and dignified working conditions
• Seminar 5: Fair rewards
• Seminar 6: Fair consultation and ‘voice’
The organisation of the seminar series is led by Colette Fagan, Helge Hoel, Miguel Martinez Lucio and Jill Rubery on behalf of the Fairness at Work research group at the University of Manchester with Jackie O’Reilly (Brighton Business School) and Annette Cox (Institute for Employment Studies).
• Registration: Participation at the seminars will be limited; to register please contact Sue Haffner [log in to unmask]
