I think part of the reason that digital mark-making is often regarded
as "a fad, a gimmick, a lesser action" is simply because it is still a
relatively new medium. It also suffers from rarely having a unique
visual identity i.e. it nearly always, intentionally or otherwise,
looks like something else - pencil, paint, ink etc. But that seems
insufficient reason to dismiss it as lacking meaning.
I have recently had the opportunity to try some drawing on an Apple
iPad. I found that there was something satisfying in being able to
draw using just a finger. True, it doesn't respond to pressure but, in
the application I used, it does respond to drawing velocity.
