Hi
well, isn't it always when you go away for a short while that things get interesting...
Thank you to those who have communicated their thoughts on the issues raised by the SPED330 discussion. As I have been blissfully absent until this morning let me endeavour to draw a line and offer a periodic note on list housekeeping (as list owner)
I don't wish to comment on the specific topic, suffice to say that a mistake is often a learning opportunity ;-)
Please read the following...
The list has a long history (going back to 1994) and provides an open subscription discussion space so, once in a while, something or other inevitably blows up. The original purpose back then was precisely to open up the possibility for the disability community to critically engage with those in academic institutions. It was, thus, to enable a greater possibility for activist critique of academic practice and discourse (which at that time was rather insulated from such critique). So let’s also regard the incident as positive proof that such engagement and critique is possible.
A few reminders, please note:
1. like most public listservs, the list has always operated as an unmoderated space. Individuals joining and individual messages are published automatically without prior editorial screening (and with 800+ subscribers in 50+ countries that would not be possible).
2. the listserv infrastructure is provided by JISCmail for the benefit of the academic community. Even as the nominated ‘list owner’, I have no power to remove any message after it has been published.
3. we value the 'self-policing' etiquette of our list members but if something on the list raises a major legal, ethical or administrative concern for you it may be better to 'dial 911' rather than risk a personal intervention (i.e. just send a note to the list management address that appears at the bottom of every message sent to the list - that's what it's there for!)
4. please remember that every post to the list is published and permanently archived on the Internet. It will always be available to anyone with Internet access and a search engine (your friends, employers, students, future employers, and so on). The need for a degree of politeness and respect for all concerned should therefore be self-evident.
In this complicated case there is not much I can do and it will be a matter for the JISCmail team who manage the server to determine whether any messages can be removed. I have written to them for their advice on the matter. I have written to the tutor concerned and have also updated the 'welcome' message that goes to all new subscribers in order to make the implications of posting more explicit.
I hope we move on with a few lessons learned.
Best wishes
