SPED 330
Final/Reflective Essay

Final Thoughts
Before taking Special Education 330, I had a pretty good idea of what it is like to be treated differently and not to be given the rights that someone deserves. I went through high school with the learning disability ADD and was a few grade levels below my reading level. I did not understand why I had to undergo so many different tests and then placed in certain classrooms with about five or six other students. Somehow I was able to work around my learning disability and graduate high school. Now I am a senior at a university studying to become an English Teacher; comprehension is still a struggle for me sometimes, but I am convinced that due to my issues of learning I will be a strong asset for my future students.
Now that this course has come to a close, I have a better understanding of what others while more severe disabilities than that of mine have to go through in order to survive and make it comfortably in society. I believe that by recognizing and respecting others’ opinions, beliefs, and learning abilities my future students will be successful in the classroom and in life. Although there are many SPED classes in schools now and most students are getting the proper IEP’s for their education, there still is always room for improvement. I feel that with the knowledge I have acquired from the readings and conversations in this course, that I will be able to bring more positive experiences for students with different kinds of disabilities. It is extremely unfortunate that students (and all people for that matter) are still being treated unfairly and not given the opportunities they have a right for. I hope that I, and others, can make every effort to be advocates for those that may not be able to fight for what they deserve.
