My dual major of Special Education and Elementary Education there is no question that I will be working with children of all different learning differentiations. While working with others it can be a draining process when choosing what is best for the student since everyone has their own method, assumptions, and beliefs. However, one must learn to show respect towards their co-workers and the parents or guardian of the disabled student. A teacher needs all of the help he or she can get when it comes to their students, it will benefit them by taking advantage of available resources such as the school councilor, reading specialist, learning disabilities teacher, the speech and language clinician, etc. By listening to other people’s ideas, my field of work and I myself will benefit greatly. I believe a person is always learning and the best way to learn is through other people. By accepting others ideas or listening to their ideas leads to the entire field improving. With new recommendations for those with disabilities it is hard for a teacher to keep up and turning to someone who understands or learned about that issue will only make them stronger. In the end however, there is only one important goal, which is a student’s success. Students with disabilities need lots of extra help and one cannot teach them alone. It is the job of the whole school district to ensure the learning environment for that child. Students with disabilities, just like any child, are all different so they will benefit from having a diverse variety of teaching methods.
This class has made me realize the importance of disability and the role it has played in society. Society has controlled the way disability has been perceived over the century and finally disabled people are beginning to be looked at in a different way. They can now have the opportunity to be independent, hold a job, and get a quality education. This is the true benefit to my future job.
