I have been watching these reflections appear on the list, ike many others. This is indeed an intriguing exercise.
Each student has spoken of their growing enlightenment and how they believe this will affect their understanding of 'disability issues' (interesting notion in itself) in their future roles.
I wonder how sustainable these resolutions and insights will be in the face of sustained pressure to relinquish these ideals and adopt the attitudes of the 'status quo'. In western cultures that seek to characterise those experiencing marginalisation as somewhat less deserving of consideration, respect and full equality it would make for interesting reading to ask these same students to write another reflective piece in 12 months time.
I also wonder whether courses with this type of content really result in changed behaviour or whether they are also part of the 'status quo' that maintains and affirms a western cultural archetype of 'disability'. I was intriqued by a recent post by Shaun Grech that really challenged these ideas.
