Applications are invited for a full time Research Fellow in Digital Storytelling to work on the Community Generated Media project. Microsoft European PhD studentship
From 1 October 2010 for three years
This project will address two key challenges for the support of user experiences with home media archives: understanding the affordances of different tangible and ephemeral media for memory and communication, and materialising media in the most suitable and evocative ways. This will require a multidisciplinary approach to interaction design, in which the ethnographic study of media use is combined with design explorations of tangible media artefacts.
This project will be co-supervised by Professor David Frohlich at the University of Surrey as well as by Assistant Professor Elise van den Hoven at the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). The student will be based in the Department of Sociology at the University of Surrey and affiliated to Digital World Research Centre (http://www.dwrc.surrey.ac.uk/). However, the student will also spend time in the Department of Industrial Design at TU/e (http://w3.id.tue.nl/en/ <http://w3.id.tue.nl/en/> ), under an EU Erasmus exchange agreement between the two institutions. This will create a unique opportunity for the student to move between two centres of excellence relating to the ethnographic and design components of the PhD work respectively, to make maximum use of their differing academic cultures and facilities. Dr Abigail Sellen will also be an external supervisor at Microsoft Research Cambridge (http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/labs/cambridge/ <http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/labs/cambridge/> ).
The project would suit an interaction designer with experience of social research methods. A good Bachelor's degree in a social science or design discipline, and a Master's degree in human computer interaction, interaction design or a related discipline is required.
A stipend will be paid at a rate of GBP £15,000 in 2010-11, plus fees at the 'home/EU' rate
Interested applicants can contact David Frohlich ([log in to unmask]) for an informal discussion of the post, and view further details at:
