James Allen Girls’ School Archive
Thursday 10th June 2010
Founded in 1741, James Allen’s Girls’ School (JAGS) is the oldest independent girls’ school in London and regarded as among the most successful in the country.
The school archives hold admission registers, school rolls and minutes of governors’ meetings which date back to the 1880s. Of especial interest are items of needlework, reminding us of James Allen’s original intention to educate girls ‘to read and to sew’, and a good collection of old photographs, dating from the 1890s.
Also the school holds records belonging to the composer, Gustav Holst. He came to JAGS as Music Master early in his career, before becoming widely known as a composer. He was introduced by his friend Ralph Vaughan Williams, and was on the staff from 1904 to 1920. Holst presented JAGS with signed copies of his Savitri, The Perfect Fool, The Planets and other works, when he left the school. These works form the core of the Holst archive, slightly damaged, unfortunately, when an incendiary bomb hit the school in September 1940.
