The Broadlands Archives
The National Heritage Memorial Fund has today announced a grant of £1,993,760 which completes the University of Southampton's campaign to raise £2.85 million to purchase the Broadlands Archives. The archives, some 4,500 boxes, have been on deposit in the University Library since 1989. They include the papers of the third Viscount Palmerston, successively Foreign Secretary, Home Secretary and Prime Minister, 1830-65; the diaries of the Victorian philanthropist, the seventh Earl of Shaftesbury; and the papers of Earl Mountbatten of Burma and his wife, Edwina, Countess Mountbatten, including extensive documentation for the independence of India and Pakistan; as well as a large group of estate papers, principally for Hampshire and parts of Ireland. Highlights from the collection can be seen in an on-line exhibition, linked to the University's home page - www.soton.ac.uk/ - or directly at www.broadlandsarchives.com
We are very grateful to colleagues who have helped us in many ways during our funding campaign over the last seven months: thank you.
